چکیده

We are iiit, erested here in t w o related problems. The first is determining whether we can triangulate a vertex-colored graph without introducing edges between vertices of the same color. This is related to a fundamental problem for geneticists, that of using charact,er state information to construct evolutionary trees. lye demonstrate the polynomial equivalence of these problems. .4n important subproblem arises when the characters are based upon DNA sequences. Such characters assume up to 4 states. We present an O(n2k) algorithm for this case where n is the number of species and k is the number of characters.

Mitochondrial DNA variation, genetic structure and demographic history of Iranian populations

In order to survey the evolutionary history and impact of historical events on the genetic structure of Iranian people, the HV2 region of 141 mtDNA sequences related to six Iranian populations were analyzed. Slight and non-significant FST distances among the Central-western Persian speaking populations of Iran testify to the common origin of these populations from one proto-population. Mismatch...

Ancient hyaenas highlight the old problem of estimating evolutionary rates.

Phylogenetic analyses of ancient DNA data can provide a timeline for evolutionary change even in the absence of fossils. The power to infer the evolutionary rate is, however, highly dependent on the number and age of samples, the information content of the sequence data and the demographic history of the sampled population. In this issue of Molecular Ecology, Sheng et al. (2014) analysed mitoch...

An Evolutionary and Phylogenetic Study of the BMP15 Gene

DNA sequence data contains a wealth of biologically useful information. Recent innovations in DNA sequencing technology have greatly increased our capacity to determine massive amounts of nucleotide sequences. These sequences can be used to specify the characteristics of different regions, interpret the evolutionary relationships between categorized groups, likelihood of performing multiple com...

New methods for inferring population dynamics from microbial sequences.

The reduced cost of high throughput sequencing, increasing automation, and the amenability of sequence data for evolutionary analysis are making DNA data (or the corresponding amino acid sequences) the molecular marker of choice for studying microbial population genetics and phylogenetics. Concomitantly, due to the ever-increasing computational power, new, more accurate (and sometimes faster), ...

Handling Rearrangements in DNA Sequence Alignment

Sequence alignment is one of the core problems of bioinformatics, with a broad range of applications such as genome assembly, gene identification, and phylogenetic analysis [1]. Alignments between DNA sequences are used to infer evolutionary or functional relationships between genes. Evolution occurs through DNA mutations, which include small-scale edits and larger-scale rearrangement events. T...
